Pilates

Pilates is a movement system created by Joe Pilates that he named “Contrology.” Pilates exercises can be practiced on the floor on a mat or using a variety of large and small Pilates apparatuses: the reformer, cadillac, tower, wunda chair, high chair, high barrel, and the spine corrector are just a few commonly used pieces of Pilates equipment. The equipment helps to work as a supportive container and adds resistance training, whereas the mat challenges one’s relationship to gravity.

Pilates exercises help to restore and reinforce ideal alignment and to support more balance in the structure of the body. With this balance, movement feels more easy and efficient. Connecting to one’s center, or “powerhouse” is an important element of Pilates training. Although there are specific exercises designed to build core strength, the system actually requires you to connect and move from your center in every exercise, so even a “leg” exercise may require a strong connection to one’s center. This training helps to support everyday movement as well, such as looking backwards when changing lanes while driving, vacuuming, picking up a heavy box, cooking, dog-walking, playing with grandchildren, sports, etc.

Pilates training may be added to your life for a variety of reasons - for body conditioning for high-level athletes and performing artists, for re-integration of exercise following physical therapy or illness, for a mindful movement practice, to support healthy aging, or as a fun new active hobby! Many people choose to add Pilates training to support conditions such as autoimmune disorders, hypermobility/EDS, pregnancy, osteoporosis, and neurological conditions.

At 3 Heart Movement our goal for every client is to learn the Pilates system as if learning a new language. It requires the same kind of practice to train your nervous system as you would need to learn to play a musical instrument or to learn to fly an airplane. All clients are supported with homework exercises and Caroline works with the client to check in and work towards goals. Caroline aims to make the traditional Pilates exercises and system accessible to everyone while respecting the design, principles, and intention of the original work.
